CONTEXT: I played all ac titles from ac 2 to rouge on a ps3 and didn't play anything from then as I was broke and couldn't get a next-gen console at the time and haven't touched a single title since unity. I fell in love with the series with the Ezio trilogy, ac3 was ok IMO it went downhill from then onwards black flag was a breath of fresh air it had a nice story and all but I simply didn't dig it it it just like rouge I consider those two meh.
I have played the "original acs" and I knew the "ubisoftness" of those games.
PREFACE: After finishing the witcher 3 I knew nothing could come near it and my hunt for another awesome RPG began, after a dozen or so reviews by many reviewers I decided I will give assassins creed odyssey a shot keeping my expectation above average after seeing all the reviews. I knew that there will be the signature "ubisoftness" to some extent that is repetitive sidequest, similar areas and the whole nine yards. From all the reviews I saw had a rough idea about what to expect. From what I grasped AC Odyssey is a great RPG / superhero game [ because Kassandra / Alexios is stupendously overpowered ] with an ac title slapped on it.
INITIAL IMPRESSION: In the first 30 or so hours my mind was blown due to the sheer volume of the map and I thought it would be completionist heaven and was super excited for the same, [ on that a bit later ] any game I play I complete all side quest I can before I proceed further and here I didn't know that boring sidequest keep respawning on notice boards after completing it took some time for me to understand that they infinitely respawn my bad tbh can't blame that on anyone. Speaking of sidequest 9 on 10 of those it's kill that guy, fetch or deliver this thing a block away or give me 50 drachmae that song and dance makes me sick just thinking about it is monotonous and boring and for that 1 barely ok side quest it is simply not worth it.
LE GRIND & MICROTRANSACTIONS: Personally I love grind when the sidequests etc are ok/rewarding if it is great or is story-rich or adds to character development it is icing on the cake however here grind is mandatory if you don't want to spend money i.e and depending on your playstyle there will be a huge level gate after reaching Attica midgame thereby forcing you to grind or buy the XP booster personally I didn't face it as I did those boring sidequests as I had known about this disaster beforehand, I don't know about you but I don't want any form of microtransaction in a full game which I bought with my hard-earned MONEY and this is filled with it left right and centre the store makes me think if I am playing a free version of mobile the game like clash of clans, the store reminds of an EA game.
COMBAT: I felt it was too damn easy without the abilities and with them, you are very overpowered I played on hard and switched to nightmare and the name speaks for itself and reverted to hard it wasn't hard enough for me it slightly challenging it was hardly engaging maybe it is just me I think most players will find it decent can't speak for all. There are 3 or 4 basic enemy types it gets monotonous real quick.
LOOT: You are showered with loot technically you can upgrade all you want but after upgrading 3 or 4 levels you can't sustain it as the resource and bling needed will rise so much you are better off switching gear and upgrade them, what I feel is amazing is that you can change the look of gears so you can be equipped with a mixed bag of them but have your preferred look so thumbs up for that.
MAP: It is simply overwhelmingly humongous the max zoom doesn't do justice for navigating at times there are a lot of places where things repeat like lesser-known settlements and scattered islands throughout the map. Most hills, caves, forts, vineyards repeat after a while you get an idea of their layout.
LANDSCAPE: Iconic places like Athens and Sparta are beautiful and marvellous to discover and dwell in, discovery tour given by Ubisoft
is fantastic if you didn't like the game you can rest well knowing that the guided tour was worth it thumbs up for that. Every greek temple looks the same as historically I think they were I don't know for sure, what I do know is that there are countless places in the map where there are a lot of similarities or to put to bluntly many areas are copy-pasted Ubisoft has given more emphasis on quantity rather than quality I think most gamers would prefer the exact opposite and the yakuza series are the living proof for that.
VERDICT: Substandard sidequest, behemoth and repetitive map, mandatory boring grind [ you can maybe skip it by paying ] has ruined this game for me the only thing I feel I have got for my 1250 INR [ 16.8 USD ]is if I lived in Greece during 431 BCE only you can put a price on it if you love architecture and everything about ancient Greece
you will adore the if I lived in Greece during 431 guided tour by Ubisoft
if you came here looking for a decent game to enjoy which has a great story, decent gameplay, an immersive open-world to interact with go for something else go check out The Witcher 3 I feel it's "the perfect game" as it aces everything one could want just it's a bit long.
