Tomb Raider 2013 Review. Bang for buck

I got this for 82 INR in today's exchange rate of 1.12 USD. As you can see above it took me 16.8 hours to completely finish the campaign 100% with all the collectables. The remaining achievements are attained through playing multiplayer which is not my cup of tea

Initial impressions:  You are Lara Croft who just graduated from university with a degree in archaeology who has set out to discover the [fictitious] ancient Island of Yamatai. The beginning itself is quite explosive i.e after you survive a shipwreck you are immediately kidnapped by some entity and tied up hanging upside down and you have to escape. In the first quarter itself, you know it in your bones that this is one of those games where the journey from the beginning to the end is what makes this game amazing irrespective of the story because of the among several factors presentation, action scenes are. This itself gives you the just of how the structure and cinematic of the game will be. The game is more of an interactive immersive action-adventure film with action scenes by Michael Bay part of the reason for this is the wonderful voice acting more on that later.

Skill tree: Overall it gets the job done although there are some annoying skills such as headshot reticle for each weapon has to be individually brought with skill points. It isn't a deal-breaker by any means it is annoying.

Gameplay: You are given the choice of going full stealth or go guns blazing but there are several instances where the confrontations are head-on so in reality, it would be wiser to have a balance of both. The gunplay is quite basic at least it is not bad, you have four weapons which you get as you progress through the story, you start with a makeshift bow, then you get a pistol, later you are given a rifle and finally a shotgun. My personal favourite will always be the bow and pistol not just in here almost every game I prefer them over anything.

Story and lore: If you choose to play the game without collecting any collectables you are given a satisfactory narrative but, the motivation to collect the collectables for me was both extrinsic and intrinsic as collecting them gave XP and I wanted the lore which is first class, the documents shed light on different time periods the relicts does the same. Their contribution to the world is substantial.

Characters: This title does a fantastic job to start the trilogy by showing the metamorphosis of an innocent young woman who turns into a survivor. The voice acting for all the characters are superb they all feel alive it is one reason why this title feels like a movie rather than a game. One scene which I still remember vividly is the one after Lara's first kill which she is forced to do to protect herself. The voice actors for all the characters have done a marvellous job. All in all top class voice acting

Conclusion: I felt the game was near perfect in all dimensions the only flaw being the skill tree. It was 16.8 hours well spent. Do pick it up.
