Picture this, you have ten minutes of free time maybe you have finished a heinous task or just finished lunch and want to kick back and relax, what do you do? You whip out your smartphone and open Instagram if you come under the category of gen z, uncles prefer Facebook edutainment, keyboard warriors jump into Reddit and let’s not forget the king of them all Whatsapp, you hop into twitter to know “news” which is tailored to you and political standings of the ideology you support or oppose you do you. The application has become absolutely imperative in a smartphone in India, all important and otherwise “information” goes through here personal, bureaucratic, loose talk, catching up with people, and edutainment too to some extent.
What I was coming to was that we dive into including but not limited to the wormholes mentioned above, it has become a staple to dive into our personalised rabbit holes to kill time literally and figuratively. We don’t think twice when we do this because everyone with a phone is doing it, our society even at a global scale has normalized this, sadly as a whole there are tons of negative consequences for this, I’ll name a few. In the case of Instagram constant exposure to all the happy and interesting events of your followers makes you think that they have everything going and your life is dull and boring, complementarily another parasite called lovingly the fear of missing out latches onto you. Fear of missing out applies to all “social” media platforms, which can or cannot build a fortress called anxiety may it not for anyone. Wrapping this up what I want to say is that introspect considerably, think at least three times before saying or doing anything dissect and analyse to some extent. Social media is to be used by you not the other way around.
