In these uncertain and perilous times, which were caused by seeds of hatred planted by the British so the East wouldn't be a united front, they followed their time-tested colonial method of causing chaos and instability, the policy of divide and rule, till the very end by orchestrating the partition.
Since the beginning of the revolt, communal tensions were instigated and escalated by the British so that the people of India wouldn't unite and bring them down. They presented poorly planned and self-sabotaging political structures in the name of being a mediator during the time of the partition.
I hope you know that one reason the British gave India independence was that, after the 2nd World War, they had exhausted their resources and it wasn't financially viable for them to retain India as a colonial country. Not saying that the fight for Independence didn't play a crucial role in attaining our freedom, but this too was one of the main factors for gaining independence.
As communal tensions rose during the partition, adequate forces were not deployed by the British; it was as if they were least bothered by what happened to the people of either side, it was as if they wished such atrocities would happen as a result of their maliciously meticulous planning.
"Lord" Mountbatten, the last Viceroy of India, was sent here in 1947 with the mission to oversee the gradual transition of power from the British. It was to be done by mid-1948, but he preponed it to the 15th of August 1947. This led to poor planning of something that is as sensitive as the partition. You mustn't forget he was given a grand and cheerful send-off by the people of India when he left the country, only if they had known what he had in store for them.
Another act sowing seeds of chaos was appointing Cyril Radcliffe, a British lawyer who had no idea about the Indian geography or culture was given the task to draw new borders. As if that wasn't enough, he was only given 5 weeks to draft the map, that too off of outdated maps and rough census data. The final nail in the coffin was keeping the final boundary line a secret and telling it two days after the independence, which led to a lot of violence and chaos.
Let us, for a moment, sit down and shed away all the cultural and religious identities given to us or chosen by us, what are we left with? A species of mammals that walk with two of their four limbs, they have certain characteristics which vary from one being to another.
At the end of the day, we are all biologically just male and female of the species we call homosapiens. In these times, not just these times, but in general, if we all have a humanistic perspective, the whole world would be heaven on earth.
Like all platonic ideologies, it is said to be impossible, as nobody is that naive and what is the chance that everyone will follow it. Just as the famous quote you see on the walls of all cafes, "the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step", sure you can say I'm delusional for saying such things but think about it for a second, how would the world have been if it was like that, feels good doesn't it?
Don't stop dreaming
